Protect Your Pictures

I lost all the photos from a vacation to Europe a few years ago. They were all on my phone, which got left in the back of a taxi to the airport in Naples. I hadn’t gotten a chance to back them up. Imagine my heartbreak, all those memories gone forever.

The last Saturday in September (September 24th this year) is Save Your Photos Day, meant to help remind people to take steps to protect their photos to keep them for posterity. Especially with the rise of natural disasters, it’s important to be forward-thinking when it comes to your photos.

The first piece of advice I have is: back those photos up! Don’t just leave them on your phone or computer, where a technological disaster could occur. Both Apple and Google have cloud-based storage: take advantage of them.

You also want to add further redundancies to cloud-based storage, such as also storing photos on a harddrive or cds. I also recommend having a physical copy. You may remember in May how I mentioned that I make a photo book every year of my favorite pictures.

Just like how I recommend having physical copies of your favorite digital images, it’s important to digitize your physical photos! Many of us have old family photos, which could be lost forever if something happens to them. Digitizing that memorabilia also makes it easier to share. My family has a google account full of digitized old photo albums from not only my childhood but also that of my parents. Not only is it neat to relive old memories, but we were also able to easily pull from that collection images for my aunt’s funeral.

It is also important to keep physical photos safe, especially in this day and age of natural disasters. Keep photo books or albums up off the floor in case of flooding and keep boxes of photos in closets where sunlight can’t cause damage.
