Making Photos Pop with Contrast

Utilizing contrast can help take your pictures to the next level and make them POP!

There’s two types of contrast to be aware of when planning your outfit for photos. The first is tonal, which has to do with contrasts in brightness, which is seen most particularly in black and white photos. Having a dark or bold color against a light background, such as a deep maroon shirt against a white-washed background, will make you pop right out.

The other type of contrast is color, which is when colors that are across from each other on the color wheel, or complementary, are used. As these colors are as different from each other as possible, they help each other stand out. This is why for Christmas, red and green go together so well. Other color combos include blue and orange, and yellow and purple.

If you know what sort of background you’ll be shot against, make use of that knowledge to pick an outfit that contrasts, whether in color or in tone! For special occasions, our client closet can help you stand out in the best way for your session to create memorable images.
